Theme Song?

By Jeanne

What’s that, you say? A theme song? What is this woman talking about? Am I the star of my own sitcom? I wish. Do I expect a theme song to begin playing when I enter the room? I’m weird but not that weird.

The song plays in a loop in my head

I’m consistently amazed at how the universe knows when I need a theme song, because invariably just the right one comes on the radio when I need it. My theme songs are important to my mental health. They make me laugh and remind me that the project or problem frustrating me is temporary.

What am I talking about? I pretty much always have a song running through my head. So, when I’m in the midst of a particularly difficult project or dealing with a particularly frustrating person a theme song can emerge. I program the song playing in my head and it helps me cope.

Here are a couple examples of my theme songs over the past several years.

“Tonight, Tonight” by Hot Chelle Rae. I particularly needed the chorus when this was my go-to song. (La la la, whatever. La la la, it doesn’t matter. La la la, oh well. La la la.) Having that song as my earworm helped remind me that in the grand scheme of life, the project giving me so much grief was miniscule. It still makes me smile when I hear it.

“Problem” by Arianna Grande. A few of the lyrics made this a standout theme song for me and it was on a continuous loop for almost an entire summer. The phrase, “I got 99 problems, but you won’t be one,” kept me sane until I no longer needed to deal with the person that caused me to have the song in the first place. This was my reminder that this too shall pass.
